HoCo Democratic Central Committee Launches New Grassroots Initiative "Neighborhood Contact Program" at Jefferson-Jackson Dinner

Rallying around the 2007-2008 focus on “Party Building”, Central Committee Chair Michael McPherson announced a new grassroots initiative to develop and strengthen the Democratic Party at the neighborhood level. The Central Committee is looking to recruit, train and develop some 300 volunteers to serve as the “eyes and ears” of the Party throughout the county, with special emphasis on Western Howard County, traditionally a Republican stronghold.

Selected members of the Central Committee will serve as leaders for each Electoral District. As described elsewhere in this newsletter, Western Howard County races (Council District 5, Assembly Legislative District 9A, and Senate Legislative District 9) involves all precincts in Electoral District 3 and 4, all but four precincts in Electoral District 2, five precincts in Electoral District 5 and four precincts in Electoral District 6.

Lead Central Committee Members in each of these districts include:
Electoral District 2: Kristen Neville
Electoral Districts 3 and 4: Byron Macfarlane
Electoral District 5: Jerome Jackson
Electoral District 6: Bill Woodcock and Debbie Matherly

WHCDC member and Central Committee member Cathy Zomlefer is the program coordinator and Romayne Smith assisted with the initial training process.

During the summer and into next year, these leaders will be contacting party volunteers and targeting Democratic voters to identify potential neighborhood leaders who will, in turn, recruit other volunteers. The objective is to build a neighborhood grassroots organization that will establish strong neighborhood ties within their community, identify issues and volunteers, and provide opposition feedback to the Party at the county, state and national levels.

Club members are encouraged to volunteer to help develop this initiative. Space is provided on the membership application form to indicate your willingness to be involved. Party-building is the key to success in 2008 and 2010. Sign up and dig in.
