Hi WHCDC Friends!

Our Endorsement Meeting and Ice Cream Social was a huge success!! We have a lot of new club members and friends as a result. We heard from our candidates and current office holders. Congressman Cummings topped off the evening with a rousing speech on why we need Democrats in office to respond to the needs of all of our people, not just the powerful and special interests. I am so proud that he is my representative in Congress!! Our endorsement results are posted below.

It is just a little over two months until the election and we have so much work to do. The club will not be meeting in September for our usual meeting because it is the day after the Democratic Central Committee’s Labor Day Picnic. I strongly encourage you to attend the picnic to get a chance to meet the candidates and to get inspired for the work ahead. The Labor Day Picnic is Monday, September 6, 2010 from 2:00 to 4:00 pm at the Cedar Lane Park East Pavilion ($15 per person/ $25 for a family).

Over the next two months we will be asking for your help with the campaigns, including making phone calls, delivering signs, knocking on doors and helping behind the scenes. Everyone has something they can do to help. For example, on Saturday, October 2nd we will have a Democratic booth at Highland Days. We need volunteers to be at the booth to hand out literature and just be a presence to show our support for our candidates. We are also making arrangements with the O’Malley/Brown and Ulman coordinated campaign to provide support there as well. Stay tuned for more opportunities to get involved.

There is way too much at stake in this election to be sitting by the sidelines. Congressman Cummings pointed out that an O’Malley loss could mean that he would no longer be our representative in Washington. We would likely be redistricted into Roscoe Bartlett’s district. That alone is motivation enough for me….

      Hi WHCDC Friends!

Are you as tired of seeing the giant Ehrlich signs in neighborhoods as I am?!?! Don't get mad, get even.... I have O'Malley/Brown and Ulman signs for your yard. Email me and we will make sure you get signs. Let me know if you need other signs, as the campaigns are beginning to distribute them now. We need to let our neighbors know that there are as many registered Democrats as there are Republicans here in West HoCo.

I apologize for the changes in our meeting schedule for August!! We have been asked by our candidates to combine our meetings for this month into one meeting on Tuesday, August 17th. They want more time to spend with the electorate - imagine that ;-)

Our August 17th meeting will be a combination of our previously scheduled Endorsement Meeting (8/10) and Ice Cream Social (8/28). The first part of the meeting will be our candidate endorsement process. We will hear from our current office holders and candidates where there is a Democratic primary. We will then vote on whom to endorse. While the votes are being counted, we will be serving ice cream and giving our current office holders and candidates, with no primary opposition, time to speak to the club members. This will give our members a chance to decide whom we want to support and to learn how we can support them in the campaign.

Also, August is Howard County Fair season!! We are asking WHCDC members to staff the Democratic Party booth on Friday, August 13th. If you are available, please contact Cathy Zomlefer at czomlefer@aol.com. Feel free to stop by the booth anytime you are at the Fair or have some time to spare. We need to have a presence at the Fair since it is in our backyard!! We are marching as a club in the parade on Saturday, August 14th in the afternoon. Super-cool, free t-shirts are available to members who march in the parade.

Let's get it going!!

Michael Cryor, Chair of the Maryland Democratic Party, will be the featured speaker for the June meeting of the Western Howard County Democratic Club at the Howard County Conservancy, 10520 Old Frederick Rd. (Rte. 99), Woodstock, just east of Woodstock Road. Refreshments and socialization begin at 7 p.m. and the program will start at 7:30 p.m. The meeting will be held in the upper meeting room, so invite other Democrats and unaffiliated friends to join you. Let’s give a big welcome to Chairman Cryor!

Michael will discuss the steps that need to be taken to build party unity and focus on winning the 2008 election and restoring a Democratic administration in Washington from local, state and national perspectives.

Prior to Michael’s presentation, we will:

(1) elect officers for the coming year. Normally that occurs in our May meeting which was subsumed by the Jefferson-Jackson Dinner; and...

(2) have a brief overview of a proposed initiative called “Western Howard Victory 2010 Coalition” which suggests a county-wide effort to win at least two seats in Western Howard in 2010 with state-wide encouragement and support.

Hon. Elijah Cummings, who represents Howard County in MD Congressional District 7, will be the keynote speaker at the 2008 Jefferson-Jackson Dinner scheduled for Tuesday, May 20, 2008 at the 10 Oaks Ballroom in Clarksville near the intersection of MD 32 and MD 108. Socialization will begin at the reception at 6:30 p.m. followed by the dinner at 7:30 p.m. The Dinner is the principal fund-raising event of the year for the Howard County Democratic Party.

Last year’s event was a huge success, built around the theme of Democratic Party Building – making Howard County all blue in 2010. The greatest challenge is in Western Howard where all four offices (State Senate, Assembly (2) and County Council) are presently held by Republicans. WHCDC made a strong showing last year selling five of the 33 tables, a total of 50 seats including 19 high school students or sponsors.

Party-building, especially in Western Howard, remains a central theme this year. WHCDC has reserved six tables with 10 seats each. The initial plan is to set aside 30 seats for high school students and 30 seats for regular club members. Our goal is to conclude ticket sales by May 1 so we can secure additional tables if necessary. Regular membership seating will be $87 and high school/sponsor seats will be $75. Students will pay $20 and the club will seek sponsors for the remaining $55. The six tables will be together and will feature reserved seating.

Seven of the 12 county high schools service Western Howard. Two (Mt. Hebron and Centennial) have established clubs, another (Marriotts Ridge) established a Club this year; one (Atholton) is in the process of organizing, and three (Glenelg, River Hill and Reservoir) need organizational effort. Our goal is to have at least potential organizer students from each of the seven high schools present at the dinner. Rich Corkran, State Senate candidate in 2006 and a recently retired teacher, is playing a leadership role in helping to organize these student clubs.

These tickets will go fast Club members who purchased tickets or supported student tickets last year will be given priority consideration this year. All club members will be contacted individually this week to determine their interest in tickets for themselves or supporting student tickets ($55 each). Those Interested in attending should contact Mearl Grabill, Club Secretary, at 410-800-8984 or grabill@bnin.net ASAP. Thanks in advance for your enthusiastic support of this important program.

At our March meeting we have the honor of having Congressman Elijah Cummings as our special guest. We will have a wide-ranging discussion with him about the presidential race, what is going on in Congress and politics in general. Please do not miss this wonderful opportunity to spend some time with an amazing man who is being seen more and more as a leading voice for our Democratic values!

Our next meeting is Tuesday, March 18th from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. at the Howard County Conservancy, 10520 Old Fredrick Rd. (Rte. 99), Woodstock, MD. Link to our website if you need directions at Western Howard County Democratic Club. Of course, this is during Spring Break for Howard County schools, so you don’t have to worry about getting home in time to help with homework and get everyone in bed!

As for the presidential primary, I am going to stop predicting that we will know our presidential candidate by our next meeting. It looks like this contest is going to go on quite a bit longer… As we discussed at our last meeting, it is important for us to model restraint and positive attitudes toward both candidates regardless of the tone of the tone of the campaign. Our friends and families look to us to see how Democrats are going to be able to work together after we finally know our presidential ticket. On a more personal note, there was a nice article on our very own Mary Jo Neville and her life as a superdelegate in the Baltimore Sun.

Finally, there is a lot going on during our legislative session in Annapolis. The Sun provides ongoing coverage of the session. In addition to the stories, there is a link to General Assembly Resources on the right hand side of the Politics page. Another good source is the General Assembly Home Page. When writing your legislator, it is helpful if you can find the bill number to reference in your letter. We have invited members of our delegation to our April meeting after the session ends for an overview of the session.

Again, do not miss the opportunity to meet Congressman Cummings! He calls WHCDC “the bravest Democrats in my district”…. I hope to see you all at the March meeting!!
